What is the Best Software You Have Never Heard Of?

Some of the greatest feats in software are not publicly discussed. This is software that is so important that you only hear about it in the extreme case when the system fails.

What is your favourite system that people use unknowingly every day?

Some examples may be:

• Cruise Control in your car
• Guidance Systems
• Thermostat (Every house has one, most are digital now)
• Security/Fire Alarms

Phones would be right up there. Sfwr at the user end would be seen in cell phones, and back endstuff for the old wall mount phones.
